The Arcadia Firefighters' Association is a proud partner of The City of Hope Division of Pediatrics. The AFFA recognizes the importance of extending support and encouragement to our local pediatric cancer patients and their families. Many members of The Arcadia Firefighters' Association have been personally affected by cancer in some capacity. It is with great honor that we are able to offer our time and resources to the children of The City of Hope. Every year just before Christmas we bring a fire engine full of toys, complete with a Santa Claus, to the children who have to spend the holidays in a hospital bed. Their faces light up when they hear the sirens and see Santa and the firefighters visit their rooms. We also raise funds through the St. Baldrick's Foundation to further research in hopes of finding a cure for pediatric cancers. Every year we pick up four pediatric patients from The City of Hope and give them a ride on the fire engines to an event where they become barbers and shave our heads. This is by far the kids' most favorite event of the year. Last year Noe, age 8, said that it was important for him to shave our heads "so that I could look like them, so that I won't have to hide behind my hat". We hope that by our partnerhip with The City of Hope, we can help elicit hope, encouragement, smiles, and resolve from our local pediatric cancer patients and their families. Keep up the fight!
